Start with the wig you actually plan to buy

Do not assume that a shop’s general returns page applies to every wig. Find the policy for the exact item or product category you are considering. Rules may differ for ready-to-wear wigs, custom orders, clearance items, hairpieces and accessories. If a listing says “final sale” or points to a separate policy, read that wording before paying.

Check whether you can return the item for a refund, exchange it for another size or colour, or receive store credit only. An exchange can be helpful when the cap feels too tight or the shade is not what you expected, but it may not help if the shop does not stock a suitable alternative. If you are unsure how a rule applies to your order, ask the shop in writing and keep its reply.

Understand what counts as an acceptable try-on

A return policy may allow you to inspect and try on a wig while requiring it to remain in resalable condition. Look for specific instructions about keeping the lace intact, leaving tags attached, retaining packaging and avoiding changes to the hair. Cutting lace, trimming bangs, applying products, heat-styling or altering the cap may affect whether the shop accepts a return.

Plan a careful first try-on. Use a clean wig cap if appropriate, handle the lace gently and check the fit before making any adjustments. Look at the hairline and colour in more than one light, then consider how the cap feels as you move your head. Keep any nets, labels and inserts until you have decided to keep the wig. These steps do not guarantee return eligibility; the shop’s stated conditions still matter.

Find the deadlines and the required steps

A policy can have more than one deadline. It might specify when you must request a return, when you must post the parcel and when the shop must receive it. Identify which event starts the clock, such as delivery, and check the procedure before the wig arrives. This is especially useful if you will not be able to inspect the parcel immediately.

See whether you need a return authorisation, a form, an order number or a particular address. Sending a wig back without following the stated process could delay its assessment. If the parcel arrives damaged or the item differs from what you ordered, contact the shop promptly, describe the issue clearly and keep photographs and order details. Check whether the policy gives different instructions for these situations.

Calculate the full cost of changing your mind

The purchase price is not always the amount you will receive back. Read how the shop handles the original delivery charge, return postage, restocking fees and any exchange postage. For an international order, check who is responsible for shipping charges and any applicable import-related costs if a return is needed. Do not assume that an exchange is free just because the item price stays the same.

Look at how refunds are issued and whether the policy says when to expect one after the shop receives and checks the wig. If store credit is offered, find out whether it expires or has other limits. Consider these terms alongside the price: a lower-priced wig with restrictive returns may be a less comfortable choice than one you can assess at home with more flexibility.

Use the policy to make a more confident selection

Returns are a backup, not a substitute for checking fit before you order. Compare your head measurements with the shop’s sizing guide, and look for details about adjustable straps, cap construction and stretch. Colour names and product photos can only tell you so much, so read the shade description carefully and ask about a colour sample if the shop offers one.

Before checkout, save a copy of the relevant policy and the product listing, then note any answers the shop gives you. If important terms are unclear, ask before purchasing rather than relying on an assumption. Return options vary by seller and location, and policies do not necessarily describe every right that may apply to a purchase. For a practical buying decision, the key question is simple: can you try this particular wig in a way that lets you judge its fit and appearance without losing the option you expect to have?
